Atabaque (or Tabaque) is a percussion musical instrument. The name is of Arabic origin: at-tabaq (dish). It consists of a cylindrical or slightly conical drum, with one of the mouths covered with ox, deer or goat leather. It is played with the hands, with two sticks, or sometimes with one hand and one stick, depending on the rhythm and drum being played. It can be used in percussion kits in Brazilian rhythms, such as samba and axé music. Capoeira atabaque, ox leather with fur, tuning in string and wedge. *Peroba Rosada hull. *Reinforced with iron rim inside the hull.
The leather comes from the cow's skin and is stretched by a system of metal rings or hoops, ropes and wooden wedges. To tune the atabaque, you take it off the pedestal (foot) and hit the wedges.
The force on the wedges will push the underhoop stretching the strings and consequently thinning the leather. Important: always take the atabaque off the pedestal before tuning.
The basis of the beat of the atabaque in the capoeira roda is the same as that of the tambourine.
There are several ways to play the atabaque, we here present one - four beats with an emphasis on the third (this may vary by school). Counting the rhythm in this way, the atabaque will be played like this: [right, left, RIGHT, right].
Try to prevent your hand from resting on the edge of the atabaque.
